Good question! Its a hell pressure cooker examination and unfair when words spread around that there was quota imposed on passing the CLP examination. It took me the second attempt to pass. With a family feed and being a working person, it took much grit or determination to pass this CLP. CLP was not an examination for graduates from local universities and I understand the government is now trying to streamline the entry of new law graduates before allowing them to enter the legal profession by scrapping the CLP and to replace it with the Comman Bar Examination. The present sohisticated world demands more capable advocates and it set a bell when the learned Lordship, Datuk Gopal Sri Ram, lament over poor quality lawyers and His Lordship said, "Many of them are bad because of the low quality training they received at local institutions of higher learning" (see New Strait Times Monday, May 26, 2008 - Prime News.

The legal profession is a glamourous profession, but, its not a profession for profit making. Many lawyers had found it difficult to make ends met and many could not maintain a proper library because law books are too expensive. To ask for fees, is also an area where many lawyers being professionals, found it difficult to open their mouths. Many clients, won or lost, just walked off when cases were concluded in court and lawyers couldn't chase the fees. This is because, lawyers normally do not bring their clients to court to claims their fees. Lawyers being professionals also found it not an act of professionalism to discharge themselves in court for fees not paid and at times lawyers had to pay court costs or filing fees if they discharged themeselves from further acting for their clients. To get a discharge may not seems easy as good reasons had to be given to the court before court allows a discharge. sometimes such prayers may fail, especially, when opponents may place objection to the application.

University Malaya Vice-Chancellor, Datuk Rafiah Salim in NST May 26, 2008, said poor command of English was also one of the main cause of poor performance in courts. This was a weakness in our tertiary education system, not legal training, because, our government emphasized too much on Bahasa Malaysia and had neglected the use of English - a communication language widely used in internet and in law books. Many of the students sitting for CLP if their command of English is below par, would definitely find it difficult with the CLP examination when references has to be made to legal journals which were mostly written in English.
